Transitional Housing, Family Contact and Basic Life Skills
Housing
- Each youth will be provided safe, reasonable living accommodations
- Additionally available to each youth will be a lockable storage space for small valuable personal items
- Handicap accessibly – SCYS home is handicap accessible.
- Special accommodations and some modifications can be made upon request.
Family contact is encouraged
- Regular calls and visits home
- Regular contact with supporting church if applicable
- Guests are welcome to visit youth at the home
Basic life-skill building
- Budgeting, Savings and Credit use
- Money management skills
- Medication management skills
- Menu planning, food purchasing
- Cooking instruction, reading and following recipes
- Gardening, lawn care and home minor home repair
- Housekeeping, laundry, basic maintenance
- Transportation, use of public systems
- Pet care and cost
- Others as identified in the plan
Money management skills
- Lifetime spending habits will be developed.
- Developing a budget
- Saving accounts established
- Plan for future self sufficiency needs
- Choosing a bank and opening savings account
- Instruction in purchasing household items for future needs
Gardening skills
Gardening skills will be taught as a means of providing nutrition, reducing food expenses, stress reduction and environmental appreciation.

- Planting and cultivation
- Active daily participation in care
- Harvesting and preparation
- Canning, storage and preservation of food harvest
- Composting and recycling of available materials
Fishing Skills
Basic fishing techniques as a food source
- Where, when and how to fish
- Cleaning your catch
- Preparation and storage
SCYS goal is to accommodate youth in the least restrictive manner as best fosters self sufficiency. SCYS reserve the right to request a resident to leave the home if a safety concern has been identified and is unresolved. All proper considerations and notice will be given. It is our intent that problems can and will be resolved though communication, education and modeled positive behavior within SCYS or with communication and support from family.
